GRP Chimneys from Man Friday GRP Solutions

GRP Chimneys Chimneys have always been a feature of traditional buildings and, whilst they used to be highly functional, today they are viewed as heavy and complex features that add significant costs to the build. Whilst modern heating and building techniques can make traditional chimneys unnecessary they are often in demand to satisfy planning and conservation restrictions as well as their aesthetic appeal.

Our GRP chimneys offer a lightweight, low maintenance solution. They are quick and easy to install, have a range of finishes and ensure reduced building costs. Standard GRP chimneys typically weigh between 25 - 50 kg, depending on size, and are designed to suit standard truss detail without the need for any additional timber bracing.

GRP Chimneys Finishes include render - rough or smooth in any colour, realistic brick effect in smooth or textured finish (no pointing required) with the options of both single colour and multi-coloured to match most bricks. We will provide a test sample for approval prior to manufacture. All our chimneys can be made to be installed in midridge, monopitch or gable-end positions with bases individually tailored to suit any roof pitch.

The bases of each of our chimneys can be finished as a plain cut. A plywood box is built in situ by the builder and flashed to Code 4, forming a weather Stop. The chimney is lowered into position sleaving over the box and fastening from within (view Installation Drawings). This method, apart from a slight cost advantage, allows the builder to weatherproof the roof prior to fitting.

GRP Chimneys Our alternative is to provide a base flange or saddle 200mm wide to through-bolt directly to the trusses. With this base type we can also fit a flashing channel 150mm above the flange so that it can be leaded to Code 4 in the traditional way (view Installation Drawings). Each chimney comes complete with internal bonded timber grounds 50 x 50mm on all sides, which not only stiffens the sides but, where required, also allows secure internal fixings, normally with galvanised straps to the roof trusses. Prior to installation waterproof felt should be fitted below the stack to allow any condensation to drain towards the gutters. All fixings must be from within the stack.

Man Friday Standard GRP Chimney Range

All the chimneys in our standard range are manufactured in lightweight maintenance free GRP. The external gelcoat is totally water and weather resistant and requires no painting. 50 x 50mm softwood timber grounds are bonded within the stack to accept screw fixings. The base flange is 200mm wide and the flashing channel 150mm up from the flange and will allow leadwork to be finished in the traditional way.
